Play Therapy

Helping Children Express, Process & Heal

When your child is struggling with big emotions, behavior changes, or anxiety, it can feel overwhelming — not just for them, but for you as a parent.

At WellNest Counseling, we provide developmentally appropriate play therapy for children ages 3–8, helping them express what they can’t yet put into words and build the skills they need to thrive.

What Play Therapy is - And why it works

When a child feels overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, or stuck in big emotions, they don’t always have the words to explain what’s happening inside. Children process experiences differently than adults do, and play is their natural language. Through clinically guided play therapy, children are given a safe way to express what they may not yet be able to verbalize.

In this supportive environment, children can safely explore difficult feelings, practice new coping strategies, and gradually strengthen emotional regulation skills.

At WellNest, play therapy is child-led and unfolds at the child’s pace, allowing them to communicate and process experiences through play. Therapists partner with parents throughout the process so that growth in the playroom translates into meaningful change at home and in daily family life.

Is Play Therapy Right for Your Child?

Play therapy is specifically designed for children ages 3–8 who are experiencing emotional outbursts, anxiety, mood shifts, social struggles, or noticeable behavior changes. At this stage of development, play is the most effective and appropriate way for children to process what they are feeling.

When typical parenting strategies aren’t resolving persistent patterns, play therapy provides a clear and developmentally sound path forward. It supports emotional growth while strengthening the connection between parent and child.

What Parents Often Notice

Every child’s progress looks different, but many parents begin to notice meaningful shifts over time. Emotional outbursts may become less intense, and children often gain greater confidence in expressing their feelings. Families frequently report improved communication at home and a stronger parent-child connection. These changes may be gradual, but they often create lasting emotional growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does play therapy take?

Every child is unique. Some families notice small improvements within the first several weeks, while deeper emotional patterns may take a few months to fully address. During your consultation, we’ll outline realistic expectations based on your child’s specific needs and goals.

Will I be involved in my child’s sessions?

Yes. While sessions are primarily one-on-one with your child, regular parent check-ins are part of our model. We share observations, discuss progress, and provide practical strategies so growth continues at home, not just in the therapy room.

What kinds of concerns can play therapy help with?

Play therapy is commonly used for anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, behavioral concerns, social difficulties, grief, trauma, and adjustment to life transitions. It offers children a safe space to process what feels overwhelming in developmentally appropriate ways.

How do I know if it’s working?

Progress is often gradual. Many parents first notice subtle shifts, such as fewer meltdowns, improved recovery after frustration, or clearer communication. We provide ongoing updates so you understand the changes happening and feel confident in the process.
