Sports Counseling for Athletes

Building Confidence, Focus, And Resilience On And Off The Field
Sports counseling focuses on the mental side of performance, the part that affects confidence, focus, and how you respond when something does not go your way.
We work with athletes on pressure and expectations, and what happens when that pressure turns into anxiety, overthinking, frustration, or feeling like you cannot mess up. You might notice your mind racing before games, replaying mistakes after a play, or tightening up in moments that matter. Together, we slow that down and build practical ways to reset, refocus, and compete with more steadiness.
We also address setbacks. Bad games, losses, getting benched, injuries, dips in motivation, and confidence that feels shaken. The goal is not to pretend those moments do not matter. It is to help you handle them without carrying them into the next play, the next practice, or the rest of your week.
Many athletes believe they should be able to manage it all on their own. But mental skills are part of training too. In counseling, you build tools that fit real life and real competition, so you can trust yourself more consistently on and off the field.
What Counseling For Athletes Looks Like
You’ll meet with a therapist who understands the culture of sports and the pressure that comes with performance. Sessions are practical, focused, and centered on what you are experiencing right now, whether that is pre game nerves, confidence swings, frustration, or burnout. You set the pace. Some athletes come in with a clear goal, others just know something feels off. Either way, we start there.
At times, group counseling may also be offered for athletes who want to build skills alongside peers who understand the same pressures. Groups are supportive, steady, and never about putting anyone on the spot. They are another way to strengthen mental tools in a space that feels grounded and real.

What is sports counseling?
Sports counseling focuses on the mental and emotional side of sports. It helps athletes manage pressure, performance anxiety, confidence swings, frustration, burnout, and setbacks. The goal is not just to feel better, but to compete with greater steadiness and trust in yourself.
Is this only for athletes who are struggling?
Not at all. Some athletes come in because performance feels stuck or overwhelming. Others want to strengthen their mental skills before things spiral. Sports counseling can support both, whether you are navigating a tough season or simply want to build more consistency and confidence.
Do you work with middle school, high school, or college athletes?
We work with athletes across different ages and levels of competition. Sessions are tailored to the athlete’s developmental stage, sport environment, and specific pressures they are facing.
What happens in a typical session?
Sessions are practical and conversational. You and your therapist will discuss what's happening in sports and build tools for real-time use. This may include strategies for calming nerves, shifting thought patterns, rebuilding confidence, or processing setbacks.
